Love Bites

Rather than give Chris directions home, Kassie fixed her bloodshot eyes out the passenger side window and let him find his own way.

If she were driving, she’d have taken Memorial Drive along the Charles River, past MIT and Harvard. Even though the schedule Mike kept pinned on the refrigerator door with a Patriots magnet showed the Red Sox were playing in Baltimore that night, there was always a chance there’d be a concert or some event at Fenway that would jam Storrow Drive like a gummed-up garbage disposal. It’d take them hours to get home.

Such was not the case, perhaps because it was a Wednesday night, and hump day wasn’t typically a great night for concerts, since the following day was a workday for most people.

“The Foo Fighters were at Fenway over the weekend,” Chris said as they cruised past Kenmore Square and the lighted Citgo sign.

Is he really reading my mind? Scary.

“I saw in the Boston Proper Jimmy Buffett and Billy Joel will be there in a couple of weeks,” Kassie said.

“Together?”

“No, I don’t think they tour together. That would be a hoot.” Kassie let out a little laugh. “But Journey and Def Leppard are performing together after Billy. Maybe going to a concert would be a great thing for us to do before …”

She didn’t complete her thought because if Chris was truly on her wavelength, he’d connect the dots and land on Paris all by himself.

He kept his eyes on the road and his voice mute. She hummed the first song that entered her mind, hoping to break the ice.

“What’s that?”

“Don’t you recognize ‘Love Bites’?”

“I didn’t know you were into Def Leppard.”

She was about to ask if he remembered the song involved a love triangle. Instead, she laughed and said, “Good to know there’s still a lot for us to learn about one another, don’t you think?”

Apparently, Chris had no opinion on the subject. Kassie resolved to change the conversation. She couldn’t imagine the idea of going to a concert stifled Chris.

“Well, that was fun.” She glanced at Chris, suspecting her sarcasm would be more discernible than her humming. Just in case, she added, “I mean tonight. Don’t you think?”

“Which part do you think was fun?” Was Chris throwing shade or was he serious? “Karen crashing our dinner party? Or you not being able to hold your liquor? In front of my parents.”

Kassie straightened her back against the seat, catching his drift loud and clear. “Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the part where your parents immediately assumed I was pregnant. Liquor or no liquor, I had to set the record straight.”

“You didn’t give me a chance to explain.”

“What’s done is done. And you know what, Chris?”

She cast a brief look at him to be sure he was paying as much attention to her as he was to the road. “You’re not always going to be around to explain. It’s up to me to dream up some pithy response to all our friends and our colleagues, including
